Yornel Martínez

Yornel Martínez, graduado del Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) en el año 2007, participa de una generación de artistas cubanos interesada por lo gestual y la metodología conceptual. Su peculiar manera de entender el hecho artístico, así como el desarrollo de un quehacer muy personal, pautado por la levedad y la poesía, le posicionan como uno de los creadores jóvenes más sólidos dentro del mapa del arte cubano actual. Ello ha posibilitado la realización de numerosas exposiciones personales (entre ellas Mi mano derecha no sabe lo que escribe mi mano izquierda, La estrella y The pure land) y su inclusión en una serie de proyectos artísticos de gran interés dentro y fuera de Cuba. En ese caso se ubican, entre otros, la Bienal de La Habana y la Trienal de Aichi, así también las muestras organizadas por el proyecto “Artista x Artista”, iniciativa del Estudio Carlos Garaicoa, la exhibición “Transhumance”, en el CAB Museum de Bruselas y “El arte es nuestra última esperanza”, en el Phoenix Art Museum de Arizona.

Yornel Martínez, who graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in 2007, belongs to a generation of Cuban artists interested in gesture and conceptual methodology. His distinctive way of understanding artistic practice, together with the development of a highly personal body of work marked by lightness and poetry, positions him as one of the most solid young creators on the current Cuban art scene. This has led to numerous solo exhibitions (among them My Right Hand Does Not Know What My Left Hand Writes, The Star, and The Pure Land) and his inclusion in a range of significant artistic projects in and outside Cuba. These include, among others, the Havana Biennial and the Aichi Triennale, as well as exhibitions organized by the “Artist x Artist” project, an initiative of Estudio Carlos Garaicoa; the exhibition Transhumance at CAB Museum in Brussels; and Art Is Our Last Hope at the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona.
